When I bought this book, I had hoped it would be a highly instuctive book dealing with the subject of the isolated d-pawn in the middlegame, instead it's just a random collection of middlegame fragments dealing with the subject of the isolated d-pawn with very light annotation. I did not find this book particularly instructive.

The Gambit Guide to the Modern Benoni

Description: Click to see full description
The Modern Benoni is one of Black's most swashbuckling openings, used to devastating effect by such players as Tal, Fischer, Kasparov and Topalov. From the outset, Black creates extreme imbalance, setting his piece activity and queenside play against White's spatial preponderance and central majority. However, during the 1980s and much of the 1990s, the Benoni fell under a cloud as a result of some very direct attacking systems by White. In this book, John Watson particularly focuses on various subtle move-orders by which Black can try to avoid White's most dangerous systems and direct the game into more palatable channels. King's Indian players will also find this book invaluable, since Watson covers many lines that can arise from King's Indian move-orders.

Aaron Nimzowitsch, one of the greatest chess researchers, called the problem of the isolani - his term for the isolated d-pawn - 'one of the cardinal problems in the whole theory of positional play'. In the present book, on the basis of numerous practical examples, the authors explain the methods of attack and defence in positions with an isolated d-pawn, from just after the opening to deep into the endgame. Grandmaster Alexander Beliavsky is best known as a four-times winner of the USSR Championship, grandmaster Adrian Mikhalchishin was a member of Karpov's training team during his epic matches with Garry Kasparov, and national master Oleg Stetsko is a highly experienced trainer and writer.

Product Description: Bulgarian GM Delchev takes a new look at his Sicilian repertoire. After a short pause, in 2008 he returned to his pet line, the Taimanov system. The result of his work is this Second edition of The Safest Sicilian. Delchev proposes a sound yet aggressive approach, based on the following move order: 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 e6 3.d4 cd4 4.Nd4 Nc6 5.Nc3 Qc7. As Black, it is extremely difficult to get a playable position without accepting extreme risks. This book deals with reliable positional systems which will serve you for many years, without having to update your opening knowledge every two weeks. This setup is especially effective against the dreaded English attack. The author is one of the world's leading experts in that field and his recommendations are based mostly on his own games. Without hiding back his secrets, Delchev reveals many new ideas and novelties in his pet line. The authors pay also attention to White's deviations from the Open Sicilian. There are chapters about 3.c3, 3.d3, 3.Nc3, 3.b3, 3.c4 and other rare lines. The book features a new form of presentation. Every system is examined in a separate part which contains three chapters: "Quick Repertoire" "Step by Step" "Complete Games". You start with the "Quick Repertoire". You'll find there all the vital information that you need to start playing the variation. "Step by Step" chapters follow the usual layout of Chess Stars books with main lines that branch to sub-lines. Finally, every part ends with "Complete Games".

Description: Click to see full description
The Najdorf Sicilian is one of the key battlegrounds of modern chess. This opening line occurs in a high proportion of top-level games, and is popular amongst players of all levels. World Champions Fischer and Kasparov are the Najdorf's most famous adherents - both made it their main defence, and scored a high proportion of wins with it, while very rarely losing. The English Attack (Be3 and f3) became popular as a direct attacking method against the Najdorf in the 1980s, following its successful use by Nunn, Short and Chandler. Since then, it has become established as the most critical line of the Najdorf, with Anand and even Kasparov himself using it to devastating effect at the highest level. This book is the first to be devoted to this most topical of openings, and its comprehensive coverage will enable players of all standards to play either side of the English Attack with confidence. Sammalvuo also discusses the trendy 6 f3 move-order, and the English Attack set-up against a variety of other Sicilian lines.

This 100-page book consists of 4 chapters, of which the first is a historical perspective of dubious relationship to the subject matter. The remaining three are "connected" by the common "theme" that the demonstrated play takes place on the queenside, but the contents could easily fit into any number of other books. If you are looking for some GM revelations or strategic insights into "Attacking the Queenside", forget it. The closest this book comes to that is the beginning of chapter 2 with the quote, "The main aim of a queenside attack is an invasion behind enemy lines by the major pieces, to the back two ranks where the main strength of the defense is normally situated. The invasion of the powerful rooks either obtains a material advantage or sometimes results in a switch over with extraordinary speed to an attack on the King."

The accelarated development of the White queen's bishop after 1 d4 Nf6 2 Bg5 was for many years considered a bizarre chess opening, practiced only by a few "eccentric" chess players scattered around the globe, including the Brazilian Octavio Trompowsky, after whom the variation was named. Then in the 1990s, after a chance discovery, the young English grandmaster, Julian Hodgson, started to play it on the UK and international chess circuit with dramatic success, scoring many short wins with dashing attacking play. By force of example, the opening then saw a rapid increase in popularity in fact, it is now regarded as "mainline" theory. Players interested in mastering this move will find here a thorough survey of the development and latest trends in this exciting opening, together with illustrative games. A must for any Competitive player.

* The perfect survival guide to the chess openings * All openings covered * Detailed verbal explanations of plans for both sides * Up-to-date and featuring many tips and recommendations * Insights into the 'character' of each opening * Written by one of the world's foremost opening experts The first moves of a chess game define the nature of the whole struggle, as both players stake their claim to the critical squares and start to develop their plans. It is essential to play purposefully and to avoid falling into traps or reaching a position that you don't understand. This is not a book that provides masses of variations to memorize. Paul van der Sterren instead offers a wealth of ideas and explanation, together with the basic variations of each and every opening. This knowledge will equip players to succeed in the opening up to good club level, and provide a superb grounding in opening play on which to build a more sophisticated repertoire. The strategies he explains will, unlike ever-changing chess opening theory, remain valid as long as chess is played, and so the time spent studying this book will be rewarded many times over. Grandmaster Paul van der Sterren has won the Dutch Championship on two occasions, and in 1993 reached the Candidates stage of the World Chess Championship. He is an internationally renowned chess writer and editor: he was one of the founding editors of New in Chess, for whose Yearbooks he has contributed more than 150 opening surveys.

Back to the future! Far from a dusty relic once played by great masters such as Rubinstein, Pillsbury, and Bogolyubov, the Zukertort System now enjoys new life. Modern world-class players such as Artur Yusupov, Teimour Radjabov, and Lazaro Bruzon have come to appreciate the Zukertort's rich potential and play it with confidence against strong opposition. The Zukertort System is a fully viable, dynamic 21st-century opening. Often considered a variation of the better-known Colle System, the Zukertort stands proudly on its own, offering White chances to launch a sharp kingside attack or to work up a slow squeeze on the queenside. In this monograph by Zukertort practitioner IM Grigory Bogdanovich, players of the white pieces will discover how to build on the assets of their position, while players of Black will learn how to defend their territory. All along, the reader is treated to a positional manual on fundamental themes such as hanging pawns, the isolated queen's pawn, and sacrifices to open lines for attack.

For the first thousand years of its history, Ireland was shaped by its wars. Beginning with the legends of ancient battles and warriors, Wars of the Irish Kings moves through a time when history and storytelling were equally prized, into the age when history was as much propaganda as fact. This remarkable book tells of tribal battles, foreign invasions, Viking raids, family feuds, wars between rival Irish kingdoms, and wars of rebellion against the English. While the battles formed the legends of the land, it was the people fighting the battles—Cuchulain, Finn MacCool, Brian Boru, Robert the Bruce, Elizabeth I, and Hugh O’Donnell—who shaped the destiny and identity of the Irish nation. This is the real story of how Ireland came to be, told through eyewitness accounts from a thousand years of struggle, brought together for the first time in one volume. It’s a surprisingly immediate and stunning portrait of an all-but-forgotten time that forged the Ireland of today.
